A Patient Perspective from Linda Sawyer

I recently had surgery. It is a valuable experience to see healthcare delivery from the perspective of a patient. I was careful not to tell anyone that I am a registered nurse or where I work. Healthcare professionals usually are treated differently and do not receive the same explanations because it is assumed that we already ”know” what to expect or what everything means. After more than 10 years working at Lumetra Healthcare Solutions to improve the quality and safety of healthcare, I was heartened to see real change in how care was delivered to me. I was kept informed at every step and told why there were unavoidable delays. The surgeons, anesthesiologist, and nurses all were diligent in assuring patient safety by completing the surgery checklist with me in the operating room, checking orders and medications with me, and assuring I was the correct patient and they were doing the correct surgery at every step from the pre-surgery appointment through recovery.… Read More

Report from the Field: Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center

The Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (LHHRC) is at a crossroads. Having inhabited its current building since the 1920s, this general, acute care skilled nursing and rehabilitation center operated by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, is slated to move into a new, state-of-the-art facility in spring 2010. This transition provides an unparalleled opportunity for the hospital to establish itself as a leader in both acute and long-term care. The Laguna Honda Organizational Effectiveness Project, led by Lumetra Healthcare Solutions (LHS), seeks to do just that by identifying how the hospital can best serve the needs of its patients and residents and maximize the opportunities offered by its new facilities. Lumetra Healthcare Solutions was recently awarded a contract from Manatt Health Solutions to support the California E-Prescribing Consortium, a group with the vision of promoting e-prescribing (eRx), as part of an electronic health record (EHR) as the standard of care.

The consortium’s objectives are to inform a statewide plan, through regional experience, to:

  • Increase provider adoption
  • Increase payer provision of electronic eligibility, formulary, and medication history
  • Increase pharmacy productivity, and
  • Raise consumer and purchaser confidence and demand

Lumetra Healthcare Solutions will provide vendor-related coordination and information to the Consortium (www.calerx.org), to broaden adoption throughout California.
