The Lumetra Board of Directors met earlier this year and effected some significant changes to its size and make-up. Assuming the position of Chair is Richard W. Chambers, who is the CEO of CalOptima, an integrated health care system that administers health insurance programs for Orange County children, low income families, and persons with disabilities. His term on the Board commenced in 2005.

A new member of the Board this year is Ravi Nemana, MBA. Mr. Nemana serves as Executive Director, Services: Science, Management & Engineering (SSME) at the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), UC Berkeley.

Prior to joining CITRIS, Mr. Nemana served as Senior Advisor at the Health Technology Center (HealthTech), a nonprofit “think tank” funded by the United States and foreign health delivery systems and health plans. At HealthTech, he directed efforts to determine the impact of emerging technologies on health care and care delivery, technology strategy, adoption, service delivery, and service innovation.

Mr. Nemana’s interests lie in sustainable, technology-mediated service models, new delivery channels for needed medical services, the roles of technology and services in emerging regions, the role of IT in long-term care, and the design of next generation medical delivery systems.

He holds a BA from the University of Chicago in the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science and Medicine (HiPSS) and an MBA from the University of California, Davis.

Another new Board member appointed this year is John H. Austin, MD, MPH. Dr. Austin is Executive Chairman/Chief Medical Officer at Arcadian Management Services. Arcadian is a healthcare services company, which provides administrative infrastructure and management services to healthcare provider groups, hospitals, and health plans.

Prior to joining Arcadian in June 1997, Doctor Austin was President and CEO of UniMed, a physician management company based in Southern California. From 1987 until 1992, he was Executive Vice President for Health Plan of America, a California HMO. From 1982 until 1987, he was with HealthAmerica, a Nashville-based HMO with over one million members, ultimately, as Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Austin was the Chairman of the Board of Coventry Health Care, a public managed care company with over 2 million members and $7 billion in revenues, until January 1, 2005. He is currently a Coventry Board member.

Dr. Austin has also served on the Board of QuadraMed Corporation. He was a member of the Strategic Planning Committee at Alexian Brothers Health Systems.

Dr. Austin received his MD degree from the University of California in San Francisco in 1970, a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University in 1972, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
