No matter the outcome of the healthcare reform legislation slowly working its way through Washington, everyone involved in the business of healthcare is going to be challenged to do more with less. I am increasingly convinced that, in order to meet our nation’s healthcare needs, it is imperative that we reduce the complexity and cost of the systems that deliver our care.
At Lumetra, we do this for our commercial, government, and international clients through integrating clinical, analytical, and technological solutions that result in better patient outcomes, lower costs, and increased revenue. The added benefit of this holistic approach is that, in our experience, they also tend to avoid the dilemma of unintended consequences that can ripple through an organization when a solution to one problem is “solved” in a vacuum.

As this issue of LQI goes to press, exciting news was announced from Stockholm that a renowned trio of researchers, including Elizabeth Blackburn, BSc, MSc, PhD from the University of California – San Francisco, won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine. These scientists discovered how chromosomes, which carry DNA, protect themselves from degrading when cells divide. This insight has inspired new directions in cancer research and therapy. Other exciting approaches have also evolved over the past year, reflecting the same perseverance and passion for changing the status quo. This article will highlight two of these new breast health research programs.
