According to Subrennia Jackson, Vice President for Healthcare Services at Lumetra Healthcare Solutions, “Health Information Technology (HIT) is leading the charge in current federal policy initiatives; the proposed economic stimulus package includes $20 billion for HIT spending.”
She continued, “Nationally, studies have repeatedly demonstrated the correlation between HIT and clinical quality. One notable review by B. Chaudhry and his colleagues, reports the favorable impact of HIT on medical care quality, efficiency, and costs.”
Recent advances in analytics support the impact of Health Information Technology on quality and efficiency, both from product functionality and a cost-effective outlook. Lumetra Healthcare Solutions offers an integrated service model for healthcare organizations with the goal of implementing electronic health records.
Ms. Jackson stated, “Our work and expertise in proactive care models, change evaluations, decision support, and sustainable change initiatives help an organization’s performance. Our clients include governmental agencies, IPAs, medical groups, physician practices, and specialty groups.”
How an integrated solution works
Review, for example, how patients with diabetes benefit from technology:
- Availability of disease specific templates that allow complete, full assessment of diabetes monitoring needs
- Registry information of patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes for population management, e.g. reminders for all patients due for an A1C test
- Real-time monitoring and tracking of diabetes-related metrics for point of care and population management
- Complete health information, including primary care and specialty care, to optimize required and incentive program reporting
- Ability for patient interaction through personal health records at patient/provider portals
- Clinical optimization for care delivered and outcomes achieved
- Accurate and timely reimbursement of care via EMR billing modules
According to Ms. Jackson, “the value offered by Lumetra Healthcare Solutions is a blending of disciplines that creates an intersection where analytics promotes an understanding of future HIT products and their functionalities. It also performs multivariate analyses to measure the effect of HIT on patient safety, measures the potential value of clinical optimization to improve care and efficiency (both financial and strategic), and builds reporting that is commensurate with that value.”
In another example of the value of clinical optimization, HIT, and analytics, Ms. Jackson cited a recent article: “22 EDs (Emergency Departments) in New York and New Jersey Now Equipped with Heightened Ability to Report on Swine Flu.“ Emergency departments use an EDIMS analytics tool to send daily H1N1 reports to state health departments. The EDs that reported data to state health departments now use the WEBeMARS analytics program and data warehouse to track disease syndromes. This approach allows them to pick up not only disease outbreaks but also bioterrorism attacks, should any occur. Historically, the ED report was made monthly. The EDIMS decision to shift to daily reporting for swine flu was motivated by the classification of the disease as a pandemic and its observance of significant increases in patients presenting with flu-like symptoms.
Our healthcare world is constantly evolving, requiring maximum efficiency and innovation. Systems require consistent use of standards and high quality data to support information sharing across wide networks. Lumetra Healthcare Solutions leverages best practices and healthcare indicators to increase the efficiency, quality, and performance in patient care.
