A Patient Perspective from Linda Sawyer

I recently had surgery. It is a valuable experience to see healthcare delivery from the perspective of a patient. I was careful not to tell anyone that I am a registered nurse or where I work. Healthcare professionals usually are treated differently and do not receive the same explanations because it is assumed that we already ”know” what to expect or what everything means. After more than 10 years working at Lumetra Healthcare Solutions to improve the quality and safety of healthcare, I was heartened to see real change in how care was delivered to me. I was kept informed at every step and told why there were unavoidable delays. The surgeons, anesthesiologist, and nurses all were diligent in assuring patient safety by completing the surgery checklist with me in the operating room, checking orders and medications with me, and assuring I was the correct patient and they were doing the correct surgery at every step from the pre-surgery appointment through recovery.

I received excellent nursing care by caring and professional nurses.  This was very different from care I received 12 years ago while hospitalized. Unfortunately, not every patient has the same positive experience and outcomes. We still have a lot of work to do. Let’s celebrate our progress and commit every day to making improvements big and small that will move the delivery system to one with consistent, reliable care with minimal variation. One that allows our committed professionals to care for patients with tools that minimize administrative work.  At Lumetra Healthcare Solutions we continue to help customers reduce complexity and cost to make this vision a reality. Give us a call.
